Collision avoidance analysis for lane changing and merging
نویسندگان
چکیده
One of the riskiest maneuvers that a driver has to perform in a conventional highway system is to merge into the traffic and/or to perform a lane changing maneuver. Lane changing/merging collisions are responsible for one-tenth of all crash-caused traffic delays often resulting in congestion. Traffic delays and congestion, in general, increase travel time and have a negative economic impact. In this paper, we analyze the kinematics of the vehicles involved in a lane changing/merging maneuver, and study the conditions under which lane changing/merging crashes can be avoided. That is, given a particular lane change/merge scenario, we calculate the minimum longitudinal spacing which the vehicles involved should initially have so that no collision, of any type, takes place during the maneuver. Simulations of a number of examples of lane changing maneuvers are used to demonstrate the results. The results of this paper could be used to assess the safety of lane changing maneuvers and provide warnings or take evasive actions to avoid collision when combined with appropriate hardware on board of vehicles.

متن کاملAutomatic Braking Method for Collision Avoidance and Its Influence on Drivers Behaviors
Collision avoidance system with automatic braking has been developed to prevent rear-end crashes. It is pointed out that driver's behaviors could be changed by introducing such collision avoidance systems. Thus, it is important to understand the driver's behavioral changes with such systems and to apply the results to its better design for effective use of the assistance system. On the other ha...
متن کاملGap Acceptance During Lane Changes by Large-Truck Drivers - An Image-Based Analysis
This paper presents an analysis of rearward gap acceptance characteristics of drivers of large trucks in highway lane change scenarios. The range between the vehicles was inferred from camera images using the estimated lane width obtained from the lane tracking camera as the reference. Six-hundred lane change events were acquired from a large-scale naturalistic driving data set. The kinematic v...
متن کاملCalibration and Sensitivity Analysis of a Stereo Vision-Based Driver Assistance System
As safety and efficiency issues of transportation hand-in-hand with the intelligent vehicle concept – have gathered ground in the last few years in the automotive research community and have penetrated into the automotive industry, vision-based applications have become increasingly important in driver assistance systems (Kastrinaki et al., 2003; Bertozzi et al., 2002). The primary targets of th...
متن کاملSafety Aspects of Freeway Weaving Sections California PATH Working Paper UCB-ITS-PWP-2003-13 CALIFORNIA PARTNERS FOR ADVANCED TRANSIT AND HIGHWAYS
One source of vehicle conflict is the freeway weaving section, where a merge and diverge in close proximity require vehicles either entering or exiting the freeway to execute one or more lane changes. Using accident data for a portion of Southern California, we examined accidents that occurred on three types of weaving sections defined in traffic engineering: Type A, where every merging or dive...
